Anticipation vs Expectation

Expectation and anticipation may seem similar; yet, a deeper understanding will reveal a totally different usage of each word. Merriam Webster gives the same definition for both terms – “act of looking forward.” After a careful analysis of these terms one will uncover something completely different.

Expectation is the belief that something will happen. A person who expects already has a perceived idea what will happen which leads to a well thought-out or notion about the event before it actually happens. In other words, your expectation moves your feelings or beliefs regarding the success of what you already know will happen. Expectation is silently waiting for something to happen. Whereas, anticipation creates a hopeful experience or chance for an opportunity leading to foreseen events. Anticipation brings excitement, since a prior action must occur for a later action to unfold. Therefore, anticipation coveys feelings of excitement because you know something will happen.  

As students of learning, stop expecting good grades, but anticipate excellent grades. Remember, a prior action must occur for you to anticipate another action. Your actions of ongoing studying, updating study techniques, recalling information, reviewing your notes, and even mapping ways to master new material consist of actions for anticipation to materialize. Anticipation requires energy and preparation. Anticipation creates possibilities for successful outcome. Anticipation keeps you engaged while preparing you for every opportunity to perform beyond your wildest expectation. I challenge you to anticipate excellence instead of waiting silently to expect good grades.

Condone - Word of the Week

Our word of the week is condone. Condone is a verb that means to treat something bad as acceptable or harmless. As student of learning, one must never condone the passing of tests without studying. Even when one makes a satisfactory grade from unpreparedness, it does not mean you should condone that method of success. Therefore, a rigid routine of studying creates readiness for each exam.

Mea Culpa -- Word of the Week

Our word of the week is Mea Culpa. Mea Culpa is a formal acknowledgment of personal fault. Mea Culpa is really another way of saying, “it was my fault or I apologize.” As students of learning, one must add this word to your vocabulary to prevent from becoming a Know IT All. As you analyze information in your studies, you may become aware of misinformation or you may realize that you learned something the wrong way. Therefore, from your internal knowledge, you may have to admit a Mea Culpa publicly to others.

Paradigm -- Word of the Week

Our first word of the week for the year of 2019 is paradigm. Paradigm means an example, an understandingly clear or typical example. Paradigm is a noun. As students of learning, you must have a talent for making studying habit like a poetic paradigm. Your habits must array with various techniques to ensure that you received the desired reward at the end of the semester. Therefore, I encourage you to make studying the ultimate paradigm this semester.

WHY are you attending Wallace Community College?

By now, one realizes that Wallace Community College (WCC) involves work. One can easily yield to the temptation of just going to class and going home. Yet, if you engage with extra activities like joining a club, visiting your professors, getting to know staff members, researching projects in the Learning Resource Center, or even attending tutorial sessions regularly, you will grow tremendously. When you stay on campus longer, it will benefit your educational growth. In the past, WCC graduates balanced academics with jobs and family obligations. Therefore, you too will reach this milestone despite external challenges. Remember, anything worthwhile requires -- your time, your growth, your knowledge, your fortitude, your resilience and so does WCC. Afterwards, you will celebrate acquiring that tassel just like past graduates. Therefore, stay encouraged!

 

As you enter your semester break, I want you to ponder the WHY. Really, think about WHY you are here at an educational institution of higher learning. Do not ask the questions - what you will receive or how are you receiving it? Ask the question “WHY are you here?” Why do you feel that right now you need to advance your learning? Think from the inside out instead of the outside in. In other words, remove the focus from your surroundings, and allow your "gut" feelings to answer the rationale for advancing your education.

Remember, to gain inspiration one must start with the clarity of the WHY question! The WHY question produces balance in your life. The WHY question solidifies your goals and ensures completion of your goals. The WHY question creates stamina so you will remain at WCC when the facts may indicate otherwise.
