Word of the Week - Cornucopia

All students of learning must have this word in their vocabulary - cornucopia. Cornucopia means abundance or a horn of plenty. The term cornucopia represents the horn of a goat from Greek mythology. According to legend, it was from this horn that the god Zeus was fed as an infant. Later, the horn was filled with flowers and fruits, and given as a present to Zeus. Today, a filled horn serves as a symbol to suggest a store of abundance. (www.m-c.com) So the next time you see an abundance of anything, think Cornucopia.

Boustrophedon - Word of Week

As students of learning, I must give you an interesting word this week which is boustrophedon. Boustrophedon is a noun that refers to writing of alternate lines in opposite directions as from left to right and from right to left. Before we standardized our writing from left to right, ancient Greek writers used a style called boustrophedon, which literally means "turning like oxen when plowing." These ancient Greeks simply started the next line immediately below the last letter, writing the letters and words in the opposite direction liken an oxen plowing left to right, then right to left. So the next time you are writing your essay from left to right and you enter the next line and continue the left to right sequence, remember the term boustrophedon to recognize the yesteryear when people then wrote the opposite way known as boustrophedon.

Umbrage - Word of the Week

Our word of the week is umbrage. Umbrage is a noun that refers to a reason of doubt or suspicion. As students of learning, one can never entertain umbrage when studying or taking tests. Umbrage leads to hesitation while expressing doubts in your answers to each question.  One must demonstrate confidence when studying; otherwise, one will give umbrage a chance to overrule your justifiable outcome. So do not allow umbrage to beat your self-confidence when preparing for exams.

Brouhaha - Word of the Week

Our word of the week is brouhaha. Brouhaha is a noun that suggests a state of commotion or excitement. Many times, students develop a rigid routine in their schedules that seem mundane or boring. Therefore, one should implement brouhaha as a means of anticipation or to reduce tedious assignments. Brouhaha will overshadow the same thing over and over again. So the next time you get bored; mentally, image brouhaha as you complete a boring task.

Linchpin - Word of the Week

Our word of the week is linchpin. Linchpin is a noun that means one that serves to hold together parts or elements that exist as a unit. Many times new material that your instructor presents can appear as scattered information. So you will need a linchpin to grasp such critical and yet complex information. Many times, your linchpin is a person who will provide you with simple examples that you can associate with this scattered information. So sometimes you may need to request that experienced person, and he or she will connect his or her past experiences as a linchpin to make this new information more comprehensible information.
